Alias Ruby Blade is the story of Kirsty Sword Gusmão - a distinguished human
rights activist and former First Lady of Timor-Leste (East Timor). Once an
aspiring documentary filmmaker, Kirsty instead became a revolutionary.
Prior to becoming the First Lady, Kirsty was known by the underground Timorese
resistance in Jakarta by the nom-de-guerre Ruby Blade. As Ruby Blade, Kirsty
became a courier, shuttling correspondence in and out of the notorious Cipinang
Prison in Jakarta where the enigmatic leader of the resistance, warrior-poet
Xanana Gusmão, was serving life in prison for his revolutionary activities.
Through correspondence, they fell in love. Ultimately, together they would foster
the tumultuous birth of the world’s newest nation – Timor-Leste.
A powerful testament to the human capacity for hope to overcome fear, Alias
Ruby Blade demonstrates that ordinary individuals, armed with little more than
moral courage, can solve seemingly intractable violent conflicts. They have, in
fact, the power to change the course of history.
